Cathleen S. Morawetz Enamel Pin
Series One, Pin No. 05
Dr. Morawetz was a Canadian mathematician who spent much of her career in the United States. Morawetz's research was mainly focused on the study of the partial differential equations governing fluid flow, particularly those of mixed type occurring in transonic flow. (How air moves over a foil to create a boom!)
To commemorate her research the pin features an illustration of fluid flow over a wing. The different colors represent different pressures of air over the foil.
2 inches at the tallest point. Black dyed metal plating with rubber clasps.
Fifty Percent of the profits from the sale of this pin goes to the The Association for Women in Mathematics. AWM is a professional society whose mission is to encourage women and girls to study and to have active careers in the mathematical sciences, and to promote equal opportunity for and the equal treatment of women and girls in the mathematical sciences.
